Nicknamed (assassin), Ndaye Mulamba participated in just two AFCONs (1974,1976) but scored a whopping 10 goals in 10 games which is 1.00 goals per match. The Congolese is 8th on the list of all-time top scorers for the competition.
His goals undoubtedly led DR Congo to their 2nd title in 1974- DR Congo won the ninth edition of the AFCON hosted by Egypt.
Mulamba commenced his 9 goals in the 1974 AFCON with a brace in Zaire’s 2-1 win over Guinea in Damanhour, Egypt. Mulamba scored the opener in Zaire’s third game in the group in the 4-1 thrashing of Mauritius.
In the semi-finals against the host nation, Egypt, Zaire won 3-2 with the red-hot Ndaye Mulamba netting a brace to send his nation to the finals.
A brace in the 2-2 draw in the finals by Ndaye ensured a replay with Zambia two days later. Zaire won the replay 2-0 on 14th March 1974 with both goals scored by Ndaye Mulamba.
The Kananga born ended the tournament as the top scorer with 9 goals and also was voted as the Best Player of the tournament. He was also selected in the CAF Team of the tournament.
Assassin’s 9 goals in the 1974 AFCON remain the highest number of goals scored by a single player in a single AFCON.
