Ghanaian football stalwart Andre Rami Ayew is gearing up for his remarkable eighth appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Since his debut in 2008, Ayew has been a consistent presence, with only a single absence in 2013. His upcoming eighth tournament will mark a record-equalling achievement in AFCON history.
Yet, Ayew is not just eyeing participation records; he’s on the cusp of rewriting history as the player with the most AFCON games played.
Currently, the record sits with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song, who boasts an impressive 36 games. Ayew is hot on his heels at 34 games, needing just three more to surpass Song’s record.
In the annals of AFCON history, Ayew finds himself among the elite, with Ahmed Hassan at 32 games and Seydou Keita at 31.
What adds to Ayew’s feat is that all the players in the top 10 for the most games played have now retired, underscoring the enduring legacy he is set to leave in African football history.
