Ghanaian international Rashid Sumaila shares his optimism about the Black Stars’ prospects in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
As the West African powerhouse aims for their fifth continental trophy, last clinched in 1982, Sumaila voices confidence in the team’s ability to make an impact in Ivory Coast next month.
Ghana finds itself in Group B of the 2023 AFCON, facing competition from Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. Sumaila urges support for the team, predicting potential surprises in the tournament.
His statement, “They (Ghana) will pull surprises in the AFCON. Let all support them,” is a rallying call to fans, as reported by Footballghana.com.
In a shift from initial plans, the Ghana Football Association has opted to prepare for the tournament in Kumasi instead of South Africa.
The Black Stars, with a rich AFCON history, have won the title four times, but the last triumph dates back to 1982.
Despite reaching three finals since then, including defeats in 1992, 2010, and 2015, the team is eager to make a mark in the 2023 edition.
Scheduled to commence on Saturday, January 13, and run through to February 11, 2024, the AFCON promises to be a stage for Ghana to showcase its football prowess and vie for continental glory once again.
