Eugene Boakye Antwi, the Vice Chairperson of the Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee of Parliament, strongly believes that a change in leadership is crucial within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to revive the declining state of football in the country.
Ghana’s disappointing performance in the ongoing U-23 Afcon in Morocco, resulting in an early exit at the group stage, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the deteriorating standards of football in the nation.
The Ghanaian team, Black Meteors, aimed to qualify for the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004 but only managed to secure 4 points out of a possible nine in Group A, which included hosts Morocco, Congo, and Guinea.
Furthermore, Ghana faced group stage eliminations in the 2021 Afcon and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Honorable Eugene Boakye Antwi emphasizes the necessity of changing the leadership within Ghanaian football due to recent tournament failures, the challenges faced by the Ghana Premier League, and issues concerning colts football.
“The way forward is that there has to be a massive shakeup at the GFA.
“The narrative out there about the operations of the FA is not reassuring.
“You may have an interest but dictating to coaches which players to field among other things?
“If these rumours are true then I am really afraid for the future of our football,” he stated in an interview with Citi Sports.
The GFA is scheduled to hold its 29th ordinary congress on July 10, 2023, where discussions regarding the next FA elections are expected to take place.
