Ghana international Fatawu Issahaku has delivered an emotional message to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanking supporters for their unwavering encouragement and promising that the team will come back stronger.
Ghana’s campaign came to an end in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia at the Kansas City Stadium. A first-half goal from Jhon Arias proved enough to send the South Americans into the Round of 16, ending the Black Stars’ hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Despite the disappointment, the Leicester City winger reflected on the pride of representing Ghana on football’s biggest stage and expressed his gratitude to the fans who stood behind the team throughout the competition.
“The biggest dream was to always represent these colours at this stage,” he said. “I want to say thank you to all Ghanaians for believing in us and giving us your wonderful support during this tournament.”
Issahaku admitted that the squad fell short of its objectives but stressed that every player gave everything possible in an attempt to make the nation proud.
“The mission here was to fight and to make the country proud. This was not the position we wanted. The target was to go further and to fight with everything. It is always a pleasure and responsibility to represent this country and we never take it for granted.”
The talented winger believes the painful experience will serve as valuable motivation for the team as they prepare for future international competitions.
“This will be a big lesson for us. It will make us stronger mentally and physically to fight harder next time. I thank you Ghana.”
The Black Stars advanced to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams after beating Panama 1-0, drawing goalless with England and narrowly losing 2-1 to Croatia during the group phase.
With the World Cup now behind them, Ghana will shift its attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September, as the Black Stars aim to rebuild and return stronger in their quest for continental and global success.
