Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has revealed a key clause in Otto Addo’s contract that allows the GFA to terminate his tenure as Black Stars coach following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie explained that the agreement between the GFA and Addo includes specific provisions tied to qualification targets.
“One of the clauses for the GFA to terminate Otto Addo’s contract is if he does not qualify the team for the AFCON,” Afriyie disclosed.
This revelation has intensified debates over Addo’s future. The Black Stars delivered a disappointing performance in the AFCON qualifiers, failing to win a single game and finishing last in Group F with only three points from six matches.
The qualification failure has prompted widespread criticism from fans, stakeholders, and former players, with many demanding a complete overhaul of the national team setup.
The GFA Executive Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, November 20, to assess the team’s performance and determine the next steps. Afriyie’s comments suggest that Addo’s removal is a possibility under the terms of his contract.
This AFCON qualification failure marks Ghana’s first absence from the tournament in 20 years, highlighting deeper issues within the nation’s football ecosystem.
