The future of the Ghana Premier League remains uncertain following its suspension, according to Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The league was put on hold earlier this week after violent scenes marred the matchday 19 clash between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko at the Nana Koramansah Park. Nsoatreman secured a 1-0 victory, but the aftermath of the game turned tragic when a devoted Asante Kotoko supporter was fatally stabbed.
In an interview with Max FM, Henry Asante Twum admitted that the immediate return of the league is uncertain, as the GFA has yet to decide on the way forward.
“For now, the resumption of the Premier League is unknown. The FA has decided to hold onto the competition until further notice,” he stated.
He further clarified that the suspension applies only to the Premier League, as other competitions have not encountered similar incidents.
“At this point, the other competitions have not recorded any incident. Nothing has happened in the other leagues. And then also, you don’t have to forget there’s always the calendar to follow,” he added.
Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko has withdrawn from all football-related activities as the club seeks justice for the late Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, the supporter who lost his life.
