Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, Head of Public Relations and Strategy for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has affirmed the GFA’s support for Black Stars coach Otto Addo, despite recent disappointing performances.
The 45-year-old coach has faced strong criticism as the Black Stars have struggled in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. After four matches, Ghana remains winless and sits in third place in Group F with only two points.
While some fans have called for Otto Addo’s dismissal, Armstrong-Mortagbe emphasized that the GFA stands firmly behind him. However, he cautioned that the GFA Executive Council expects a clear improvement in the team’s performance in upcoming matches.
“The FA engaged Otto Addo on a long-term basis, and based on his early performances against Mali and the Central African Republic, we believe there’s potential for growth for the nearly three years he was engaged for,” Armstrong-Mortagbe explained in an interview with Metro TV.
“Unfortunately, our AFCON qualifying series hasn’t gone as we hoped, but he remains in charge with the backing of the FA and the Executive Council,” he added. “We expect to see improvements in our upcoming World Cup qualifiers, indicating that what happened previously was an anomaly, not a trend.”
The Black Stars are set to resume their AFCON qualifying campaign next week, determined to secure a spot in the 2025 tournament in Morocco. They will travel to Luanda to face Angola on November 15 at Estádio 11 de Novembro, followed by a home game against Niger Republic three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium.
