Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council Member Samuel Aboabire has attributed the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to the players’ underwhelming performances.
Aboabire specifically criticized the lack of consistency in goal-scoring, singling out Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo, who has excelled at the club level but struggled to replicate that form for the national team.
“Semenyo is scoring consistently for Bournemouth, yet we don’t see the same productivity when he plays for the Black Stars. This lack of conversion has hurt us,” Aboabire told Amansan TV.
The Greater Accra Regional FA chairman expressed optimism that Ghana’s fortunes could improve if players bring their club-level performances to the national team.
“If our players can replicate their form at club level when they wear the national jersey, Ghana can definitely qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” he added.
Aboabire, who is rumored to be a candidate for the Black Stars’ new management committee, stressed that addressing this disparity is essential to restoring the team’s competitive edge.
The Black Stars’ disappointing AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign, marked by missed chances, has sparked widespread calls for changes in the technical setup and player management. As Ghana turns its attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the need for improvement remains urgent.
