Accra Lions returned to winning form with a determined 2-1 victory over Legon Cities at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The match began with high intensity as Ernest Agyensem put Lions ahead early. However, Legon Cities quickly responded, equalizing through Frank Akoto’s well-taken penalty. Just before halftime, Musa Hamzata restored Lions’ lead, which proved to be the match-winner.
The game kicked off with excitement, as Jacob Awoute narrowly missed a powerful shot from distance. Legon Cities responded with an attack of their own, but Kojo Gyesi’s effort was denied by goalkeeper Daniel Afful.
The breakthrough came when Lucky Nwafor delivered a dangerous ball into the box. Ahmed Yousif’s initial attempt was blocked, but Agyensem pounced on the rebound to put Lions in front.
Both teams created opportunities, with Legon Cities nearly leveling through Agyemang Raymond. As halftime approached, Joseph Amoah’s cross struck Richard Agyen’s hand, leading to a penalty. Captain Akoto stepped up and converted from the spot to restore parity.
Lions almost regained the lead before the break when Lawrence Setirdjie’s corner nearly found the net. However, their persistence paid off moments later when Setirdjie sent in a precise free kick, allowing Hamzata to finish decisively.
In the second half, Lions had chances to extend their lead. Derrick Owusu squandered a golden opportunity in front of an open goal, while Nwafor and Yao Sokpoli also came close.
With Legon Cities pushing for a late equalizer, it took a heroic save from Afful in the dying minutes to secure a crucial win for Accra Lions.
