Accra Lions staged an impressive comeback to defeat Basake Holy Stars 2-1, boosting their hopes of staying in the Ghana Premier League.
The visitors took an early lead just four minutes into the game when Prince Tweneboah converted a penalty. The spot-kick was awarded after Tweneboah was fouled in the box by Richard Agyen, and the winger calmly slotted the ball down the middle.
The early goal sparked a reaction from Accra Lions, who began to press for an equaliser. Midway through the first half, Jacob Awoute appeared to be fouled in the opposition’s box, but referee Nathan Annaful waved play on, denying the home side a penalty.
As halftime approached, Musa Hamzata nearly drew Lions level with a powerful header from a Fuzy Taylor corner, but the effort narrowly missed the target.
Coach Rainer Kraft made a triple substitution at the start of the second half, bringing on Seidu Sadat, Lawrence Setordjie, and striker Benard Kesse to inject more energy into the game.
The changes had an immediate impact. Kesse made a surging run down the left wing and delivered a cross that found Edmund Amakye. His shot was blocked, but the rebound landed for Hamzata, who came close again, missing by inches.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, Hamzata finally got his reward. He unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area to level the score.
Just five minutes later, Accra Lions completed the turnaround. A well-worked team move ended with Fuzy Taylor delivering a pinpoint cross that Lucky Nwafor headed home, sealing a deserved victory for the home side.
Late in the game, Lions goalkeeper Daniel Afful pulled off a brilliant save to preserve the lead and secure all three points.
