Heart of Lions suffered their first back-to-back defeats in the Ghana Premier League since May 2024 after a narrow 1-0 loss to Nations FC at the Kpando Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The league leaders entered the match with hopes of ending the first round of the season on top of the table. However, those aspirations were dashed as Nations FC claimed a hard-fought victory, bringing Lions’ remarkable 19-match unbeaten home run to an abrupt end.
Lions dominated possession in the first half, creating several opportunities to score but failing to convert against Nations’ well-organized defense. The visitors, content to absorb pressure early on, grew stronger in the second half, relying on counter-attacks to trouble the home side.
The breakthrough came in the 82nd minute when Ivorian forward Boris Djangone capitalized on a defensive error to net the decisive goal for Nations FC. The visitors held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points.
The win moves Nations FC to second place on the league table with 32 points from 17 matches, closing in on the top spot. For Heart of Lions, the defeat sees them drop to third, a disappointing conclusion to their first-round campaign and a blow to their title ambitions.
As the second round approaches, Lions will look to regroup and reignite their charge for the title, while Nations FC aim to maintain their momentum and challenge for league supremacy.
