Gianni Infantino has secured his position as President of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) for another four years, following an uncontested re-election at a FIFA congress in Kigali, Rwanda.
Infantino has held the position for seven years, succeeding Sepp Blatter in 2016. Although his latest mandate will end in 2027, FIFA’s statutes allow him to run for another term until 2031.
Infantino expressed his gratitude to delegates for their continued support, stating that being FIFA President is both an honor and a significant responsibility.
In other news, the 2026 World Cup will be expanded to feature 48 teams, with the tournament hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and featuring a total of 104 games.
This expansion will result in a new round of 32 stage, with 12 groups of four teams competing, and the winners and runners-up of each group advancing to the knockout stage, along with the eight best third-placed teams.
