Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has made it clear that the government will not finance travel for Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the minister explained that public funds will be reserved strictly for essential officials directly involved in team operations.“The government will not fund the travel of Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ahead of the World Cup,” he said.He further clarified that key figures such as the General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, GFA President Kurt Okraku, and members of the Management Committee will receive government support.
“However, the General Secretary [Prosper Harrison Addo], the president of the GFA [Kurt Okraku], and Management Committee members will be taken care of, but the government will not fund the trips of any Executive Council members because you cannot head into the tournament, especially the president of the GFA,” he added.
The decision comes as Black Stars intensify preparations for the Mundial, where Ghana will be making its fifth appearance on the global stage.Drawn in a competitive Group L, Ghana will face Panama national team, England national team, and Croatia national team.
The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by a clash with England on June 23, before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.As part of preparations under head coach Carlos Queiroz, the team will engage in international friendlies against Mexico national team and Wales national team.
The policy direction from the Sports Ministry underscores a more targeted approach to government spending, focusing on efficiency and direct team support as Ghana gears up for the World Cup.
