Medeama SC were crowned Ghana Premier League champions on Sunday after a commanding 5-2 victory over Heart of Lions at the Tarkwa TNA Park, ending Bibiani Gold Stars’ slim hopes of retaining their title.
The result confirmed Medeama — known as the Mauve and Yellow — as league winners, as their nearest challengers, Gold Stars of Bibiani, suffered a 3-1 defeat at Dreams FC on the same afternoon.
Dominant from the start
Medeama had established themselves as firm favourites even before the final stages of the season. Playing attractive, purposeful football, they have accumulated the most wins (17) alongside Gold Stars and have conceded the fewest defeats (5) of any side in the division. Their standout performer in the first round, defender Kamaradini Mamudu, caught the eye of clubs beyond Ghana’s borders and secured a move to Al Hilal Omdurman during the second transfer window, where many thought it was going to affect their chances.
A dip in form mid-season briefly allowed the defending champions, Gold Stars, to mount a serious title challenge, but Medeama steadied themselves, with talented midfielder Salim Adams emerging as a key figure. His consistent performances dragged the club back to winning ways and restored confidence within Ibrahim Tanko’s squad.
As the campaign entered its final five games, a two-horse race took shape. Crucially, Medeama demonstrated a resilience their rivals lacked — picking up vital points away from home while Gold Stars repeatedly came unstuck on the road.
A title-winning afternoon in Tarkwa
Sunday’s decisive clash unfolded at a raucous TNA Park. Kelvin Obeng set the tone early, powering home a header in the 18th minute to give the hosts the lead. Heart of Lions responded and drew level just before the break, but Obeng struck again two minutes later to restore Medeama’s advantage going into half-time.
The second half produced moments of quality and drama. Fordjour Derrick extended the lead in the 72nd minute, a goal that effectively sealed the title as it placed the match beyond the visitors’ reach. Fordjour then added a fourth in the 82nd minute, sending the stadium into a state of joyous celebration — noise, colour, and elation spilling into every corner of the ground.
Dogli pulled one back from the penalty spot with two minutes remaining, but it amounted to little more than a consolation for the visitors. Prince Owusu rounded off a remarkable afternoon by scoring Medeama’s fifth — the club’s 50th league goal of the season — a milestone that underlined the depth of quality within Tanko’s side.
Gold Stars fall short
Any lingering doubt was removed almost simultaneously in Dawu, where Bibiani Gold Stars — the reigning champions — fell to a 3-1 defeat against Dreams FC. The result confirmed what the table had been suggesting for weeks: this was Medeama’s year.
For the Tarkwa club and their passionate supporters, it was the culmination of a season of sustained excellence — a title won not merely on the final day, but over the course of an entire campaign.
