Spanish forward Nico Williams has revealed that Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan was his childhood hero.
The Athletic Bilbao star, who has Ghanaian heritage, shared that he grew up idolizing the former Black Stars captain.
Williams, the younger brother of Ghanaian international Inaki Williams, made headlines for his impressive performances at the recent European Championship, where he was one of Spain’s standout players. He capped off the tournament with a goal and the Man of the Match award in the final against England.
During an interview with 3 Sports while visiting Ghana, Williams spoke fondly of Gyan, saying, “When I was young, around six years old, I liked Asamoah Gyan. He is our best striker. He scored a lot of goals. I loved Asamoah Gyan.”
Gyan, who is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances, also holds the record for the most goals scored by an African player in World Cup history. He retired from professional football last year at the age of 38.
As Williams continues to carve out a promising career, with his future at Athletic Bilbao still uncertain, he seems poised to follow in the footsteps of his footballing hero, potentially creating his own legacy.
