The league title success of Hearts of Oak this season has certainly put almost all Phobians in jubilant mood in the country and for club legend Bernard Don Bortey he mentions the special treatment he received from the fans of the club during the best days of the CAF Champions League winners of the year 2000.
The club of Togbe Afede XIV clinched the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League title with 61 points in 33 games following a 1-1 draw against Liberty Professionals as closest rivals Asante Kotoko lost at Bechem United.
The former dribbling wizard has been speaking about the title success of his former club and he congratulates Ibrahim Salifu for his contribution to the team of Samuel Boadu, Bortey is quick to remind the former Eleven Wonders playmaker he is still behind in terms of the upper echelon of the club.
“You can see what they have achieved. If you look at Salifu Ibrahim everyone is mentioning his name here and there. In the game against Liberty you saw the money that the fans dropped on him but let me say that the money the Hearts of Oak fans poured on me those days was lot more than this. I have taken some really good money from them than Salifu has.” Don Bortey said to Kessben FM but it is unclear the sort of question that was posed to the legend that attracted this answer from him.
“I was treated like Jesus Christ by Hearts of Oak fans. They placed their shirts and clothing on the floor and I walked on it just like it was done for Jesus Christ” Bortey spoke high of him as he remembers his playing days.
