Former Ghanaian international Prince Tagoe believes that the Black Stars can only thrive if players bring at least 80% of their club-level performances to the national team.
His comments come after Ghana’s disappointing form in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where the team has secured only two points from their first three Group F matches.
The Black Stars’ hopes of qualifying for AFCON 2025 took another hit after a goalless draw against Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Ghana’s struggles in the qualifiers, including a loss to Angola and draws against Niger and Sudan, have sparked widespread concern among fans and pundits.
Tagoe, speaking to Bryt FM, highlighted the need for players to bring the same intensity they show at their clubs when representing the national team. “If the players can replicate at least 80% of the performances they exhibit at their various clubs, we will undoubtedly win games. We have good players, but the character they exhibit in approaching Black Stars games is very low, and that has been our biggest problem,” he said.
Ghana will need to significantly improve their performance in their upcoming return leg against Sudan in Tripoli, Libya, to keep their hopes of qualifying for AFCON 2025 alive. Otto Addo and his team are under pressure to secure a positive result in the crucial match to stay in contention for a spot in the tournament.
