Sudan head coach James Kwesi Appiah expressed his pride and joy after leading his team to a 2-0 victory over Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The match, held at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi, Libya, marked a significant milestone for Sudan as they continued their quest for qualification.
Following the match, Appiah reflected on the emotional complexities of the victory, particularly given his history with the Ghanaian national team. “It’s unfortunate for Ghana. Ghana has a good team, but it’s unfortunate that only one of us can go through,” he said, acknowledging the quality and talent of the Black Stars while recognizing the competitive nature of the tournament.
Despite his sympathy for Ghana, Appiah took great pride in the joy their success brought to the Sudanese supporters. “I’m happy we’ve been able to put a smile on Sudanese faces,” he added, emphasizing the importance of this victory for the nation.
The triumph not only boosts Sudan’s hopes of advancing in the qualifiers but also highlights Appiah’s effective leadership since taking the helm. Under his guidance, the team has demonstrated resilience and determination, crucial traits in the highly competitive landscape of African football.
As Sudan celebrates this crucial win, they remain focused on their journey to the AFCON, aiming to build on their success in upcoming matches.
The Falcons will be back in action in the November international break for their final two games of the qualifiers against Niger and Angola.
