Ghanaian striker Inaki Williams has voiced his frustration and disappointment over the officiating in Athletic Club’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final loss to Barcelona.
The match, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ended with a 2-0 victory for Barcelona, securing their place in the final. However, the game took a controversial turn in the 86th minute when Williams’ goal was disallowed after a VAR review.
The forward criticized the decision, arguing that it lacked fairness and consistency. “It was like playing away from home,” Williams said during a post-match interview. “I find it strange that these types of plays are cancelled. I don’t think it’s fair.”
Williams went on to question the uniformity of officiating standards, implying that some teams might be treated differently. “It seems that the rules are not the same for everyone,” he remarked.
With the victory, Barcelona moves on to face the winner of the second semi-final between Real Madrid and Real Mallorca. Meanwhile, Williams’ comments add to the ongoing debate about the use and interpretation of VAR in modern football.
