Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has issued an apology to the nation following the Black Stars’ disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The four-time AFCON champions struggled throughout the qualifying campaign, losing three matches and drawing three, ending the group stage without a single win. With only three points from six matches, Ghana finished bottom of Group F, marking their first AFCON absence in 20 years. The last time the Black Stars failed to qualify was in 2004.
Asante Twum expressed deep regret over the team’s poor performance, which has caused widespread disappointment among Ghanaians. “I would like to apologize to Ghanaians for the massive disappointment of not qualifying for the AFCON,” he said in an interview with Asempa FM.
Reflecting on the team’s struggles, Asante Twum, who has followed the Black Stars for two decades, emphasized the unprecedented nature of their failure: “I have followed the Black Stars for two decades, and I have not seen anything like this before; that we go into qualifiers, play six games, and not win a single game. I have not seen that before.”
The Black Stars’ 2-1 defeat to Niger in the final round of qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium further compounded the disappointment, sparking concerns among Ghanaians.
With AFCON qualification now out of reach, Ghana will turn their focus to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which begin next year.
