Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Jordan Opoku has appealed for patience from Ghanaians as the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing the importance of long-term team development over immediate success.
Speaking in an interview with Bryt FM in Koforidua, Opoku explained that the national team is undergoing a rebuilding phase under new head coach Carlos Queiroz, and needs time to develop a clear identity.
He noted that expectations should be managed as the coach works to establish his philosophy, playing style, and preferred squad.
According to him, the priority at this stage should be constructing a strong foundation for the future rather than focusing heavily on short-term results.
Ghana have been placed in Group L for the World Cup alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, a challenging group that will test the team’s progress and development.
Despite the tough opposition, Opoku believes the focus should remain on growth and gradual improvement, rather than pressure for instant success.
He also referenced Ghana’s history at the tournament, pointing out that the country’s best performance remains the quarter-final finish in 2010, and argued that sustainable progress should now take precedence.
For Opoku, building a stable and competitive team structure is more important at this stage than rushing for immediate glory.
