Kojo Addae-Mensah, a key figure in the committee that appointed Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, has called for Addo’s resignation following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on GTV Sports Plus after Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Angola on Friday, November 15, Addae-Mensah expressed his deep disappointment with the outcome and stated that Addo should step down from his role as head coach.
“For not qualifying for the AFCON, I think Otto Addo should resign. The least he could have done was to qualify us for the AFCON,” Addae-Mensah remarked.
His comments reflect the growing frustration among fans and football stakeholders, who believe the head coach has fallen short of expectations.
The 1-1 draw against Angola was a devastating blow for the Black Stars, as it confirmed their elimination from the qualifiers for the 2025 AFCON. Despite an early lead through a brilliant free-kick by captain Jordan Ayew in the 19th minute, Ghana couldn’t hold on to their advantage. Angola equalized in the second half with a powerful header from Zini, sealing Ghana’s fate.
With no chance of qualification remaining, Ghana’s final Group F match against Niger on Monday, November 18, at the Accra Sports Stadium will have no impact on their standing. The Black Stars will be playing only for pride, as the result no longer affects their qualification prospects.
The upcoming match provides an opportunity for reflection and regrouping, with the focus now shifting to rebuilding the team following the disappointing end to the AFCON qualification campaign.
