Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has cast doubt on the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign promise to introduce a 24-hour economy, suggesting that such a system already operates in some sectors.
During an Instagram Live session, Gyan highlighted that essential services like police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already function around the clock, questioning the novelty of the policy. “It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis. So, if the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should say that they will improve it. It’s not a new policy,” Gyan stated.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates surrounding the 24-hour economy initiative, a central pledge of former President John Mahama and the NDC during the 2024 general elections. The proposed policy aims to boost economic activity by encouraging businesses to operate 24 hours a day, particularly benefiting the informal sector.
While critics, including Gyan, argue that some sectors are already functioning on a 24-hour basis, supporters of the policy contend that the initiative seeks to expand the concept to other areas like retail, transportation, and entertainment, creating a truly round-the-clock economy.
John Mahama, who won the 2024 elections, has committed to implementing the policy after being sworn in on January 7, 2025.
