Asante Kotoko head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has offered valuable insights into his team’s tactical approach that led to their narrow 1-0 victory over rivals Hearts of Oak in the Super Clash at Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
Ogum acknowledged the intensity and competitiveness of both sides, particularly during the first half. “It was a very tight and compact game, especially if you look at how both teams played in the first half,” he said in the post-match press conference.
The Kotoko coach explained how his team adapted to Hearts of Oak’s direct playing style, revealing their strategic adjustment. “We realised they were direct in their approach, so we decided to leave Albert [Amoah] up top, creating a three-man attack to launch counterattacks,” he said. “This allowed us to create several chances.”
The tactical change paid off when Albert Amoah scored the decisive goal in the final moments of the match, further cementing his stellar form this season. Ogum praised Amoah’s performance, calling his goal a result of the team’s collective effort and strategy.
While lauding his own team’s performance, Ogum also acknowledged the quality of Hearts of Oak’s play. “Hearts of Oak played very well,” he noted, showing respect for the Phobians despite Kotoko securing the crucial three points.
The win lifted Kotoko to sixth place in the league standings with 21 points, while Hearts of Oak dropped to seventh.
