Abraham Boakye, famously known as One Man Supporter, and the President of the Ghana Supporters Union, has emphasized the pivotal role played by Richard Kingson in the triumph of the Black Stars during the mid-2000s to 2010 era.
In an interview with Angel FM, One Man Supporter highlighted Kingson’s exceptional contributions, asserting that the goalkeeper, fondly called Olele, was instrumental in securing victories for the nation. He credited Kingson with singlehandedly clinching crucial wins, without which the Black Stars wouldn’t have achieved their remarkable milestones.
Delving into Kingson’s impact during the 2010 World Cup, One Man Supporter underscored how the team heavily relied on his defensive prowess under Milovan Rajevac’s management, emphasizing Kingson’s pivotal role in maintaining the team’s defensive solidity.
“Olele was responsible for 70% of the team’s success. He alone held the team together and made sure they succeeded. For a team to succeed, you need your goalkeeper to be good and have some luck and Olele did just that for Ghana. He was making important saves while Ghana was scoring only one in matches,” he said.
While Kingson’s career spanned several tournaments, he is particularly remembered for his standout performances in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. His crucial saves in group matches against Serbia, Australia, and Germany, as well as his stellar performance in Ghana’s memorable 2-1 victory over the United States of America in the knockout phase, solidified his status as a legendary figure in Ghanaian football history.
In total, Richard Kingson made 96 appearances for Ghana and even managed to score one goal for his country, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
