Nana Sarfo Oduro, a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council, has hinted that Chinese-owned pay-TV operator StarTimes is close to rejoining as the official broadcaster of the Ghana Premier League.
StarTimes, which previously held the broadcast rights for the top-flight league, has not been airing the games due to an outstanding debt of nearly $1 million. However, in an interview with Asempa FM, Sarfo Oduro revealed that negotiations with the company are nearing completion.
“We are almost finalizing the deal with StarTimes, and it’s likely they will return for the second half of the 2024/25 season to broadcast our matches,” he shared.
The broadcaster’s return is expected to boost the league’s media coverage and improve access for fans worldwide. Additionally, StarTimes is expected to air FA Cup games.
Since the switch to free-to-air broadcasters, the quality of the Ghana Premier League’s opening matchday broadcasts has faced significant criticism, with many fans pointing out the poor standard of coverage.
