Stephen Appiah, the former captain of the Black Stars, has shared a story about how he paid for his teammates’ plane tickets and winning bonuses during his time as a player.
Appiah, who famously led Ghana to its first-ever World Cup appearance in 2006, expressed his disappointment over the lack of involvement of former players in the administration of football during an interview with Sunyani-based Sompa FM.
He believes that former players have done enough to earn a place in the management of the game.
Appiah revealed that there was a time when players declined invitations to play for the national team, and he had to use his own money to pay for their flight tickets and winning bonuses. He expressed his frustration over the current state of affairs in football administration.
In addition to the 2006 World Cup, Appiah also led the team to the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
