Former Ghana defender Sam ‘Foyoo’ Johnson, has heaped praises on Hearts of Oak poster boy Joseph Esso, stating the ‘top quality’ striker has what all it takes to play for the Black Stars.
The former Hearts of Oak and Fenerbache man stopper, says he won’t be surprised to see him don the Black Stars jersey.
Esso, has been in scintillating form for the Phobians this campaign with his incredible contribution upfront, scoring two goals with one coming in the former Caf Champions League winners’ 2-1 loss to rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.
”Esso is doing very well in the Ghana Premier League, having watched him play in most of the games this season, I am convinced and can say he’s a Black Stars material,” he told SportsworldGhana.com exclusively in an interview.
”I have seen a lot of quality this season in the league who can all play for the Black Stars, especially there are some Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold players who when given the chance can also play for the Black Stars.
”I watched the Hearts of Oak game against Ashantigold and I saw some quality in their team who I believe won’t disappoint at all when they are invited by the technical handlers of the Black Stars.
”I remember during our time we were competing with the foreign players and that really brought competition in the team, some of these guys are playing actively so it would be nice to see them invited to be part of the Black Stars team.
”At least they can be part of the team, train with the foreign guys and get more experience which would go ahead to improve their quality and I am confident they will excel if only they are given the platform and the opportunity,” he concluded.
The Local Black Stars striker has played in all the opening nine matches of the season for Hearts of Oak, winning two MVP’s the matches against his former club Ebusua Dwarfs and Dreams FC.
He would be hopping to be handed his debut Black Stars call-up by head coach CK Akonnor next month following his impressive start to the season.
Esso was a key member of the Black Stars ‘B’ team that finished second at the 2019 WAFU Cup tournament in Senegal.
