Lewis Koumas struck deep into stoppage time as Wales fought back to earn a 1-1 draw against Ghana in an international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday.
The late equaliser denied new Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz a winning start after Ghana appeared on course for victory following Caleb Yirenkyi’s second-half goal.

Wales dominated much of the contest and came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half. Daniel James was particularly threatening, hitting both the post and crossbar as the hosts piled pressure on the Ghanaian defence.
Despite Wales’ control of possession and chances created, the Black Stars remained resilient and gradually improved after the break.

Ghana made the breakthrough in the 65th minute when substitute Ernest Nuamah’s effort struck the upright. Caleb Yirenkyi reacted quickest to the rebound and calmly slotted home to give the visitors the lead and score the first goal of the Queiroz era.

The goal sparked celebrations among the travelling Ghanaian supporters, who hoped it would end the team’s recent struggles.
However, Wales continued to push forward in search of an equaliser and were rewarded in the third minute of added time. Neco Williams delivered a precise cross into the box and Koumas rose to head home his first international goal, ensuring the match ended level.

Although Ghana were disappointed to surrender their advantage late on, the result ended a run of five consecutive defeats and provided a positive platform ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars, who are preparing for their fifth appearance at the global tournament, will next face Jamaica in another warm-up match before beginning their World Cup campaign. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
