Ghana defender Jerome Opoku has lauded the Black Stars’ disciplined defensive performance after they secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars produced a resilient display on Tuesday night, frustrating the Three Lions throughout the contest and earning a valuable point that strengthened their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
Both teams entered the fixture with winning starts to their World Cup campaigns, with Ghana defeating Panama 1-0 and England overcoming Croatia 4-2.
Despite England boasting one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking line-ups, Ghana remained organised and composed from start to finish, limiting the European side to few clear-cut opportunities.
Reflecting on the performance, Opoku credited the team’s preparation and ability to execute the tactical plan.
“We prepared for what they had. We saw their quality, their attacking quality, the runs, and I think we just defended really well. Good luck to them,” he said.
Asked whether he was surprised England failed to breach Ghana’s defence, the centre-back said he always had faith in his teammates and their ability to compete at the highest level.
“I wouldn’t say surprised because I’ll be kind of doubting myself. But I just think they’re a good team and they tried their best, we tried our best and the result speaks for itself.”
Although the draw leaves Ghana in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32, Opoku insists the squad is remaining focused and grounded ahead of their decisive final group fixture.
“I’m good, positive. I told you before. The vibe’s good, man. We’re staying humble. We’re focusing on the next game. We’re not going to let anything get to our heads. We’re going to continue.”
The result leaves Ghana and England level on four points at the top of Group L, setting up a thrilling final round of matches.
While England will face Panama, the Black Stars will take on Croatia knowing that another positive result could secure a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
