Egyptian giants Zamalek are reportedly eyeing a January move for CF Montreal and Ghanaian forward Kwadwo “Mahala” Opoku.
The 23-year-old could join the Cairo-based club if negotiations between the two sides prove successful.
Zamalek, who have won the Egyptian Premier League 14 times, are exploring the possibility of securing Opoku on an initial loan deal with an option to make the transfer permanent. However, CF Montreal is only willing to let the talented forward leave through an outright purchase.
Opoku joined CF Montreal in 2023 after helping LAFC win the 2022 MLS Cup. The Canadian side acquired him for $1,750,000 in General Allocation Money. Unfortunately, his debut season in Montreal was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 515 minutes of playing time.
Despite speculation about a move to Egypt, Opoku has reported for Montreal’s pre-season camp as the team prepares for their training sessions in Tampa, Florida. The former Ghana youth international remains a key player as Montreal finalizes its roster for the upcoming season.
Opoku first arrived in Major League Soccer from Ghanaian lower-tier side Attram De Visser Academy. In his title-winning season with LAFC, he made 34 appearances, playing in every regular-season match. His contributions were pivotal as LAFC clinched their first-ever MLS Cup in a dramatic final against the Philadelphia Union.
