Asisat Oshoala, the Nigerian icon, secured her record sixth CAF Women’s Player of the Year award after propelling Barcelona to Champions League glory.
The 29-year-old striker, who outshone South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda, retained her crown at Monday’s awards gala in Marrakech.
Oshoala, Barcelona’s top scorer last season with 27 goals across all competitions, played a pivotal role in the Spanish giants clinching a domestic double.
Her scoring prowess contributed to Barcelona retaining their Primera Division title and triumphing over Lyon to lift the Champions League in Turin.
Making history in Spanish football, Oshoala became the first female player to be awarded the highest goalscorer in the Spanish top flight, notching 20 league goals.
This exceptional campaign marked her supremacy on the continental stage, setting her apart 11 months after her last triumph.
With six total wins, Oshoala now surpasses fellow Nigerian Perpetua Nkwocha, securing more wins than any other African in history.
Her remarkable consistency and goal-scoring prowess have illuminated women’s football in 2022, earning her another individual prize to proudly sit alongside her five previous African Women’s Footballer of the Year titles.
