Former Asante Kotoko chairman, Herbert Mensah, has raised concerns about the quality and readiness of Ghana’s Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana is set to participate in the tournament, hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico later this year, marking the nation’s fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
In preparation, the Black Stars are scheduled to face Mexico in an international friendly on May 22, followed by a clash with Wales on June 2.
Despite securing qualification, Ghana’s performance during the March international break was underwhelming, as they suffered consecutive losses to Austria and Germany. These results have prompted questions about the team’s form leading into the World Cup.
In an interview with LUV FM, Mensah probed the squad’s ability to compete at the highest level, asking whether the players are both mentally and tactically ready.
“But are the players good enough? Have they been well prepared? Are they stable? Are they demoralised by what’s going on? What is the leadership team and the team like?” he questioned.
Mensah also highlighted potential issues behind the scenes, expressing concerns about the team’s internal environment and management structure.
“How does it really work within the caucus group of the Black Stars, and whether the management team themselves are okay, and there’s a lot of self-examination,” added Herbert.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, facing Panama, England, and Croatia. Ghana will kick off their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
