GPL Week 9: Five fascinating things we learned as Obeng Junior murders Porcupine Warriors

1. Heart of Lions beats Kotoko as Obeng Junior scores

Probably Hearts of Oak’s best weekend of the entire season as their former forward Obeng Junior scored the only goal at the Len Clay Sports Stadium in Obuasi to help Heart of Lions beat Fabulous.

The Kpando-based club was always going to pose a huge threat to the struggling Asante Kotoko after their shocking midweek defeat. The defeat was an incredible one for Bashir Hayford’s side as it could be likened to the 1-0 win Heart of Lions recorded in 2006 at Waterloo in Konongo over Fabulous.

Obeng Jnr’s lone goal has helped Accra Hearts of Oak closed the gap to just three points against perennial rivals Asante Kotoko. Prosper Ogum Narteh will steal the headlines throughout the entire week in Kotoko’s news.

2. Ouattara is the happiest man in the Ghana Premier League now

Ivorian head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has seen it all. I doubt there’s any coach in the league who has been enjoying roller coaster moments than the Ivorian. He was under immense pressure in the whole week with rumours saying that he has been given three games to justify why he should still be the coach.

The visit to Tarkwa was the trickiest but he passed it with flying colours. Phobia defeated Medeama SC 2-0 at the TNA Park in Tarkwa through Kwabena Boateng and Mawuli Wayo’s second half strikes. Aboubakar Ouattara can breath now but he still has a lot to do to convince the fans that he is the right man for the job.

3. Nations FC wins third away game of the season

They are a great side whenever at home since gaining promotion to the GPL. Nations lacked everything away from home last season: courage, confidence and consistency  but now, they have been able to overcome everything and shinning away from home. Against Karela in Tamale, Nations won 1-0 through the red hot Faisal Charwetey’s lone goal.

Kasim Mingle’s side have won 10 out of the 15 points available in away this season and it is the reason why they sit second and are just 3 points behind Bibiani Gold Stars. Nations needs to repeat their last season’s incredible home form and can do better than last season.

4. Bibiani Gold Stars’ missed a huge opportunity to extend their lead

It was top against bottom at the Dun’s Park in Bibiani. Many expected Frimpong Manso and his men to finish off the beleaguered Dreams especially when Richmond Tetteh was shown straight red card in the 30th minute. For almost 70 minutes, surprisingly, Bibiani Gold Stars at their heaven could not break down the bottom-placed-10-men Dreams.

It’s a moral-booster results for Karim Zito’s Still Believe and they still must believe in themselves that they can turn things around with this crucial point.

5. Yaw Joachim Acheampong is sittinng on a time bomb

Yaw Acheampong is likely to lose his job due to poor performances from his Ogya Boys. The situation is extremely difficult because Aduana Stars sits just a place above the relegation zone having amassed 8 points from 9 games.

A letter was served to the head coach last week via the hierarchy of the club from the fans demanding Yaw Acheampong to step down from his role. Only wins and wins and wins can defend the under-fire boss and the earlier the Ogya Boys start responding, the better it will be for everyone at the club.

Aduana will host Karela in Week 10 and it has the potential to be Yaw Joachim Acheampong’s biggest moment at Dormaa-Ahenkro.
