The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Henry Asante-Twum, has disclosed that the Executive Council is split over Otto Addo’s suitability to continue as head coach of the Black Stars.
This comes in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in over two decades, a historic low for the national team.
Speaking to Joy FM, Asante-Twum revealed that Addo faced a nearly five-hour meeting with the Executive Council on November 20, 2024, where he presented a detailed report on the team’s poor performance during the qualifiers.
“There were members who argued that they do not believe Otto Addo is the right man to take the team to the next level, including the World Cup qualifiers and future tournaments,” Asante-Twum said.
He further explained that while some council members pushed for Addo’s dismissal, citing the team’s inability to win any of their six group matches, others suggested retaining him with improved backroom support and a revamped management structure.
“If you play six matches and are unable to win a single one, then what is the point? We have to move on without him,” one faction argued.
Ghana finished bottom of Group F with three points from six games, marking an unprecedented setback for the four-time African champions. The GFA’s final decision on Addo’s future is expected after further consultations with key stakeholders.
