Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has addressed the long-standing rumors of a rivalry with his former Black Stars teammate Andre Ayew, dismissing claims of any personal animosity.

While Gyan acknowledged that Ayew is a “good person,” he suggested that external forces have played a role in creating tensions between them.

Gyan and Ayew are two of Ghana’s most influential footballers of the past decade, both having played crucial roles in Ghana’s memorable runs at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. Gyan captained the Black Stars from 2012 to 2019, with Ayew eventually taking over the captaincy, fueling speculation of a rivalry between the two stars.

Despite occasional rumors of conflict, both players have consistently expressed mutual respect for one another. However, Gyan’s recent comments hint that external influences have contributed to the perception of rivalry.

“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people,” Gyan explained during an Instagram Live session. “That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone.”

While Gyan retired from football in 2023, Ayew remains an active player, though he has been sidelined from the Black Stars under head coach Otto Addo.
