Former Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer, has expressed his disapproval of Winfried Schäfer’s appointment as the technical advisor of the Black Stars.
The German coach, best known for leading Cameroon to victory at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been officially named the technical advisor for the Black Stars and the technical director of the GFA. His appointment is part of efforts to strengthen the national team’s technical setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March. This follows Otto Addo’s failure to qualify Ghana for the 2025 AFCON.
Reacting to the decision, Osei Kweku Palmer argued that Schäfer should have been appointed as head coach rather than serving in an advisory role.
“Winfried Schäfer should have been appointed as Black Stars coach rather than an advisor to Otto Addo,” he told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.
The Black Stars will face Chad and Madagascar in their upcoming Matchday five and six World Cup qualifying fixtures.
