South African football has been left in shock following the reported passing of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
The talented midfielder, who recently represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup, died shortly after returning from the global tournament, where he showcased his ability on football’s biggest stage.
Details surrounding Adams’ death remain unclear, but his representatives and guardian have confirmed the tragic news while appealing for privacy for his family during this difficult period.
Mamelodi Sundowns were also approached for comment but chose not to confirm or deny the reports, instead urging respect for the player’s family as they grieve their loss.
Adams’ mentor, Brendine Johnson, delivered an emotional tribute, describing the devastating impact of the midfielder’s sudden passing.
“At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now because they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone. This passing has ripped everybody apart,” Johnson said.
He added that Adams had been full of optimism after returning from the World Cup and was looking forward to the next chapter of his career.
“I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning after the World Cup and going on, knowing what lies ahead. He was prepared. Nobody expected this,” Johnson added.
Adams rose through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC, where his performances quickly earned him recognition as one of South Africa’s brightest young midfield talents.
His impressive displays secured a move into the Mamelodi Sundowns setup, while his consistency also earned him opportunities with the national team.
The midfielder’s recent World Cup involvement represented a major milestone in his career, with many viewing him as a player destined for a long and successful future in the game.
His passing has sparked widespread mourning across South African football, with tributes expected from clubs, teammates, supporters and the wider football community.
