AFCON 2025 Semi-Final Preview: Nigeria aim to extend scoring record as Morocco seek first final since 2004

Nigeria and Morocco go head-to-head in Rabat on Wednesday for a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. Both teams enter the semi-final with strong form, but contrasting records and histories add intrigue to this high-stakes clash.

Match News and Current Form

Nigeria enter this semi-final as the team to beat, having recorded a 100% winning return so far in the tournament. After a convincing 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria, the Super Eagles have tallied 14 goals, making them the leading scorers of AFCON 2025. A win here would see Nigeria reach their ninth AFCON final and back-to-back finals for only the second time in history.

Despite their attacking prowess, caution is warranted: Nigeria have lost three of their last four AFCON matches against the host nation, meaning they will need to balance their forward momentum with defensive vigilance.

Morocco, the tournament hosts, brushed aside Cameroon 2-0 in the quarter-finals, marking their third consecutive clean sheet. The Atlas Lions are seeking to reach only their third AFCON final, having previously done so in 1976 and 2004. With a remarkable scoring record—failing to score in just one of their last 18 AFCON games—Morocco are well-placed to challenge for a place in the showpiece match and potentially end a 50-year wait for continental glory.

This will be the first AFCON meeting between the two sides since 2004. Overall, Morocco have the edge in previous encounters, winning three of five matches (Nigeria W2).

  • Nigeria: Only one of their last seven AFCON semi-finals saw them score 2+ goals. They are averaging 16.8 shots per game, the highest in the tournament.
  • Morocco: Have failed to score in three of their last four AFCON semi-finals. Only one of their five matches in this tournament saw both teams score.

Key Players and Missing Men

Nigeria will look to Ademola Lookman, who has been directly involved in 11 goals in 11 AFCON appearances (6 goals, 5 assists) over the last two tournaments—the most of any player. The Super Eagles will be without captain Wilfred Ndidi, suspended for this match.

Morocco’s attacking hopes rest on Brahim Díaz, who has scored in all five matches so far and could become the first player in AFCON history to score in six different matches in a single edition. However, the Atlas Lions will miss Azzedine Ounahi, sidelined with a calf injury.


This semi-final sets up a classic tactical battle: Nigeria’s attacking firepower against Morocco’s disciplined defence, with both sides eyeing a historic step toward AFCON glory.
