The Black Stars’ ongoing struggles have seen them slip four places in the latest FIFA World Rankings, as Ghana’s recent poor form continues to impact their standing in world football.
In the November 2024 rankings released by FIFA on November 28, Ghana has dropped to 77th position, a reflection of their disappointing international performance, including their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Currently, the Black Stars are one of the worst-performing teams in Africa. They finished at the bottom of Group F in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, earning only three points from six matches and failing to secure a win. Angola and Sudan, on the other hand, secured their spots for the tournament.
This marks a repeat of a similar situation in 2004, when Ghana missed out on the AFCON and saw their worst-ever FIFA ranking, plummeting to 89th place.
With no international matches scheduled until March 2025 for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, Ghana’s ranking may not see significant improvement until their next competitive fixtures.
In the continental rankings, Ghana currently sits at 14th place after collecting just one point from two games in the final round of AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
Niger, in contrast, has seen a significant rise in the rankings, thanks to their impressive back-to-back victories in the AFCON qualifiers, including a dominant 4-0 win over Sudan and a 2-1 triumph over Ghana in Accra.
