Simba SC delivered a stunning performance to book their place in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals, overturning a two-goal deficit against Egyptian side Al Masry in a nail-biting encounter that ended with a penalty shootout.
Having lost 2-0 in the first leg in Suez, the Tanzanian giants needed a flawless showing at home—and they delivered just that, winning 2-0 in regulation time to level the tie on aggregate.
The comeback began in the 22nd minute when Elie Mpanzu broke the deadlock with a brilliant solo run and finish. Just ten minutes later, Steven Mukwala—formerly of Asante Kotoko—rose high to power in a header, giving Simba the crucial second goal and bringing the aggregate score to 2-2.
Mukwala’s contribution proved vital, as his goal set the stage for the dramatic conclusion.
The match wasn’t without its moments of controversy. Simba were initially awarded a penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision. Meanwhile, Al Masry goalkeeper Mahmoud Gad produced several key saves to keep his team in the contest.
With no winner in regular time, the match headed to penalties, where Simba showed nerves of steel. Jean Ahoua, Mukwala, Kibu Dennis, and Shomari Kapombe all found the back of the net with their spot-kicks. Al Masry, however, faltered under pressure, missing two penalties—ending their journey in the competition.
