Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has officially responded to the misconduct charges filed against him by the GFA Prosecutor, pleading not guilty and asserting that his comments were misinterpreted.
In his defense, Afriyie stated, “My comments were taken out of context, misinterpreted, and do not constitute improper conduct,” emphasizing that his remarks were a misrepresentation rather than an attack on the league’s integrity.
The charges, filed on November 7, stem from an interview Afriyie gave on Kumasi’s Kessben TV, where he referenced alleged match-fixing incidents involving Ashantigold and Inter Allies, suggesting potential manipulation within the Ghana Premier League. The GFA claims that Afriyie’s comments damaged the league’s reputation, citing Section 11(2)(d) of the 2019 GFA Disciplinary Code, which prohibits actions that bring the league into disrepute.
Following Afriyie’s plea, the GFA Prosecutor will review his defense alongside the relevant regulations to determine whether the charges will be upheld or dismissed.
