Captain of the senior national team, Asamoah Gyan, says the Black Stars can win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title without him.
According to the ex- Sunderland goal poacher, though his name is synonymous with the Black Stars, it does not guarantee him a permanent place in the team.
“Of course, Ghana can win the AFCON trophy without me, if you look at Ivory Coast, without their talisman Didier Drogba, they were able to win the trophy. France went [to the world cup] without Karim Benzema but they won, so in football anything can happen,” he told Asempa Sports.
According to him, selection of players into the national team is the sole prerogative of Akwasi Appiah, the coach.
“There have been games which I wasn’t featured, so it is not always that it will be Asamoah Gyan. Asamoah Gyan has been a household name; I have been with the national team for about 16 years now, I have scored most of the goals and people know me to be prolific so it is normal mentioning my name when it comes to the Black Stars,” he added.
Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of the Ghana national team, with 51 goals. He represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups. With six goals, he is the top African goal scorer in the history of the World Cup.
