Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association, radiates confidence as the Black Stars gear up for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
With the pursuit of a fifth AFCON title in mind, Okraku envisions a significant impact from the Ghanaian national team in the upcoming tournament, scheduled to unfold later this month.
The Black Stars find themselves in Group B, facing formidable opponents such as record-winners Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde during the group phase. Okraku’s optimism shines through as he articulates his belief in the team’s potential ahead of the tournament.
Speaking at the official unveiling of the Black Stars squad for AFCON 2023 on a Monday morning, the Ghana FA president expressed a sense of possibility. He emphasized that in football, the unpredictable nature of tournaments allows both top-performing and less-performing teams to shape the narrative of success. In his words, “Ivory Coast is possible,” indicating that the Black Stars are poised for a competitive and promising campaign.
Ghana boasts a rich history in AFCON, clinching the coveted title four times, with the last triumph occurring in 1982. However, the team has faced heartbreaks in three subsequent finals, succumbing to penalties against Ivory Coast in 1992, a defeat to Egypt in 2010, and a repeat loss to Ivory Coast in 2015.
The AFCON 2023 tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13, and will captivate football enthusiasts until February 11, 2024.
Okraku’s confidence reflects not only the anticipation surrounding the Black Stars’ campaign but also the hope that this edition of AFCON will be the stage for Ghana to reclaim its place among the continent’s football elite.
As the countdown to the tournament begins, fans eagerly await the unfolding drama, hoping for memorable moments and a triumphant journey for the Black Stars in Ivory Coast.
