Brazilian club Grêmio FBPA have refused to release Ghanaian winger Francis Amuzu for the Black Stars’ upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team.
According to reports from journalist Filipe Duarte, the Brazilian side received official notice that the winger was expected to report to Ghana’s national team camp on Thursday, May 14.
However, Grêmio declined the request, citing the late timing of the call-up and the club’s demanding schedule in the coming weeks.
The Brazilian outfit are preparing for important fixtures against Confiança, Bahia, Palestino, and Santos and are unwilling to lose the player during a crucial period of the season.
The development comes as a major setback for Amuzu, who had earned his maiden Black Stars call-up under newly appointed Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz.
Born in Ghana but raised in Belgium, the winger represented Belgium at youth level before recently deciding to switch his international allegiance to Ghana.
Amuzu had previously rejected a Black Stars invitation in 2022, maintaining at the time that his international future remained with Belgium.
However, the 26-year-old recently committed to Ghana and was expected to begin his international journey with the Black Stars before Grêmio’s intervention.
The friendly against Mexico forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America as Queiroz continues assessing players ahead of the tournament.
