Africa has seen many great goalkeepers historically. Big names like Cameroon finest hands Joseph Antoine Bell, Thomas N’kono and Jacques Songo, Ghanaian Robert Mensah (never made name abroad though), Tony Silva of Senegal, Richard Kingson of Ghana and many others but who are the best African goalkeepers currently?
SPORTSWorldGhana presents to you the Top three.
1.Edouard Mendy (Senegal) – Chelsea FC
Age: 28
Games played this season : 13 (Played 1 game with Rennes)
Clean sheets : 9
Goals conceded : 4 ( 1 goal conceded with Rennes)
Before the Senegalese national goalkeeper came to Chelsea, the team of Frank Lampard biggest weakness was their defence esoecially the area of goalkeeping but that has improved massively thanks to the safe goalkeeping of the former Rennes Number One.
Only three players have been able to breach Chelsea goal when Mendy has been the net-minder. They are Eric Lamela of Tottenham Hotpsurs, David McGoldrick of Sheffiled United and Sehrou Guirasy of Ste Rennes.
Mendy’s current hot form for both club and country makes him one of the best three African custodians out there.
2.Andre Onana (Cameroon) – Ajax
Age : 24
Games played this season : 15
Clean sheets : 6
Goals conceded : 11
The Cameroonian has conceded in every Champions League game Ajax has played this season which is statisticlly not good for the talented Onana.
Onana, who spent time at FC Barcelona, obviously started to draw attention in Europe long time before someone like Chelsea’s Mendy came to prominence and has a bigger pedigree but at the moment, in terms of performance the Senegalese is the better shot-stopper. Check the numbers. They don’t lie.
3.Yassine Bono (Morocco) – Sevilla
Age: 29
Games played this season : 9
Clean sheets : 4
Goals conceded : 7
The Morocco Number One is currently sidelined at the Spanish La Liga side due to illness and has missed the last three games of his side including the 4-0 loss to Chelsea on Wednesday.
