Former Ghana Football Association vice-president George Afriyie has delivered a strong message to GFA president Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku following Ghana’s continued decline in the FIFA rankings.
In a social media post that has sparked reactions among football fans, Afriyie warned that weak structures and poor football fundamentals would continue to expose the country on the international stage.
“When the fundamentals are weak FIFA Rankings will expose you. Let’s fix the fundamentals Mr Prez. Ignore the sycophants and praise singers,” Afriyie wrote.
The former football administrator accompanied his remarks with a comparative table showing the FIFA rankings of Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Nigeria from 2019 to 2026.
According to the figures shared, Ghana’s ranking has dropped significantly from 47th in 2019 to 74th in the latest available ranking for 2026. In contrast, Senegal have consistently remained among Africa’s top-ranked nations, rising to 14th globally in 2026, while Ivory Coast and Nigeria have also maintained stronger positions than the Black Stars in recent years.
Afriyie’s comments appear to question the direction of Ghana football under the current GFA leadership, especially at a time many supporters have expressed concern over the performance of the Black Stars and the general state of football development in the country.
The outspoken football administrator has been a known critic of certain decisions by the current GFA administration and has repeatedly called for stronger grassroots structures, improved player development and better football management.
His latest comments come amid growing public debate about Ghana’s competitiveness on the continental and global stage, with many fans demanding reforms to restore the country’s football glory.
Despite the criticism, the Ghana Football Association under Kurt Okraku has overseen several reforms and developmental initiatives, although results at senior national team level continue to attract scrutiny.
