Abdul Salam Yakubu, the President of New Edubiase, has come to the defense of Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton in response to recent criticism directed towards him.
Following Ghana’s goalless draw with Madagascar in the fifth round of qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager has faced backlash.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Abdul Salam Yakubu stated that it is too early to judge Chris Hughton and urged for patience to be exercised.
He expressed his belief in the coach’s qualities and referenced his experience coaching in the English Premier League. Abdul Salam Yakubu acknowledged that coaching in Africa requires a different philosophy, similar to how some players, like Inaki Williams, may struggle when adapting to African football.
“He is a coach that I believe has a lot of qualities. I have watched him coach in the English Premier League. Playing in Africa is different and requires a different philosophy that is why players like Inaki Williams come and struggle. It is the same for coaches.
“Let’s give him time. Things will fall in place,” Abdul Salam Yakubu said.
Since assuming the role of head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton has guided Ghana to one victory and two draws in three games.
