The Ghanaian football fraternity is well divided now as many think the nation’s football is dead while others think it is still alive.
The Communication Director of the GFA has stated emphatically that Ghana’s football is not in any crisis as many believe.
“Our football cannot be called a dead product when we qualify for the Women’s World Cup, win gold medals in both male and female competitions and have Dreams FC in the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup,” said Henry Twum Asante in an interview with Akoma FM.
Dreams FC’s semi-finals in the CAF Confederation Cup is exciting news for Ghanaian club football. It is the first time that any team from Ghana has played in the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup since that format was introduced in 2009.
Ghana won Gold medals in the 2024 All-African Games hosted in Accra a month ago. It was an exciting moment for the country as it was historic.
Ghana Women’s youth national teams are regulars at the FIFA World Cup.
These are arguments those who believe that our football is in a good state can make.
What about the Black Queens having not qualified for the World Cup since 1999? What about
Are Ghana’s youthful teams not being seen any more on the world stage? What about the Black Stars not winning a single game in the last two AFCONs?
What about the Ghana Premier League having no headline sponsors? What about EXCO members taking home 100k USD while the winner of our league gets 30k USD?
What about the local league struggling to keep the best players? What about some GPL players receiving less than 1,000 cedis per month as salary?
Where are the academies for the nation that are supposed to groom the next generation? Where is the ultra-modern infrastructure for the national teams?
Ghana football is never in good shape. We all need to honestly accept it and start the journey to rescue it.
